Although the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie will be released in the upcoming months, its sequel already has a release date, supplying wizardry fans with their healthy dose of Harry Potter lore.

The film develops in the 1920’s New York City. Eddie Redmayne plays Newt Scamander, who arrives at the city’s port with a case teeming with mythical creatures. The beasts manage to escape, and it is for Scamander to track them down before they wreck havoc on post-depression era New York City.

Based on Harry Potter’s companion books

Reportedly, there will be three films based on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, one of the books that accompanied the Harry Potter series. Author J.K. Rowling has stated that she would only make a return to the “wizarding world” if she came across an idea that truly captivated her and her audiences. Rowling took the role of becoming the primary screenwriter.

The film was first announced on 2013, where Rowling claimed that the upcoming films would be held seven years before the events of Harry Potter. Steve Kloves is also working on the series, who had already worked with Rowling on seven Harry Potter films. Photography started in August 2015, shooting scenes in London and Leavesden’s Warner Bros. studio. Liverpool was used to mimicking 1920’s, New York. Reportedly, filming for the first movie ended on January 28.

Newt Scamander, Magizoologist

The book that originated the story was written under the pseudonym Newt Scamander, where Rowling posed as the film’s protagonist. The book features a foreword by Albus Dumbledore, and the reader can see several written notes by Harry, Hermione, and Ron.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a book on Magizoology of the Harry Potter universe, where several monsters and creatures are shown with their classification of danger, accompanied by a hand-made drawing. The book elaborates on several beasts appearing on both classic mythos and Harry Potter lore, such as the basilisk, manticores, pixies and the Acromantula.

According to director David Yates, Rowling has already written the screenplay for the sequel, and Warner Bros. proceeded on announcing that the film was indeed going to occur. It is known that the second film in the series will touch the darker side of the wizarding world, as the screenwriting has already finished. According to Screenrant, Rowling already has had some ideas for the third.

“She’s done the first one. She’s written the second one. She’s got ideas for the third one,” stated director David Yates.

Even though the film is inspired by the book of the same name, there is no novel to tell the tale, so Rowling has a broader spectrum of creativity to work on this trilogy. As the story progresses, fans can expect deeper and more complex paths, typical of the Harry Potter universe.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be released on November 18, 2016. The second movie in the series should be released on November 16, 2018, while the third installment is set on November 20, 2020.
