Videos on the media show an enormous mystery object flying across the Pacific Northwest around 11:35 p.m. Friday, according to the Fireball Event Log at the American Meteor Society website. Around 135 people alleged they saw what they described as a large and bright fireball in the sky.

People were posting about the event that happened Friday night, most of the reports came from the Willamette Valley and Oregon Coast, but some of them even case as far as Port Angeles, in the north, and Medford, in the south. People described it as a blue colored fireball, which was moving slowly from left to right leaving a long tail behind. The event lasted about 7 or 8 seconds. Tough some witnesses reported it was rather slow lasting about 13 seconds, instead.

What is the mystery object?

About 135 reports were made about a bright object blazing through the sky around the Friday midnight. People used their smartphones to show what they were beholding on the social media. According to the American Meteor Society, it was mostly seen in Oregon but it was also visible in the Washington sky over Port Angeles and even some witnesses were from as far north as British Columbia in Canada. Most of the reports came from the Willamette Valley.

According to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry “hard to say if it was spacecraft debris or not.” Said the Director of Space Science Education Jim Todd. According to him, it was “was ‘very bright, lasted for roughly seven to eight seconds’.

Nobody is sure of what was the fireball-like object despite being identified by multiple cameras.

A meteor or a UFO?

Right now, scientists are trying to determine exactly what the bright object was or where it came from. Todd said it was moving from west to east and that it was quite fast. The bright color could mean it was breaking into pieces. But reports say the bright fireball stayed consistent and it seems to be rather slow for a meteor. It lasted some seconds and then it vanished into the night sky. No impact towards earth has been reported which drive some to think it could be a UFO

People posted on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube mixed opinions about the bright object describing it as a UFO, a meteor or even spacecraft debris.

“Pretty awesome streak of light across the sky above Portland about 10 minutes ago. Meteor? While another person said on the same event ‘Meteor or UFO just fell from the sky in Portland and I am dead sober,” said a Twitter user.

Jim Todd also said they, at the OMSI, are working to gather enough data to resolve the mystery of the bright fireball in the sky. The also said that it probably break down to pieces, adding that if the object survived at all the rest of it should probably be in the Rocky Mountains.
