Modern-day musical La La Land is leading the nominations for the 2017 Academy Awards. Damien Chazelle’s movie got 14 nominations, and it is likely that it will continue the records it made earlier this month at the Golden Globes when it received seven awards including best motion picture, best actor and best actress.

Among the nominations received by the musical starred by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone at the Academy Awards, are the nominations for best picture, best actress, best director, and others. The 89th Annual Academy Awards will air on February 26, and they will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

La La Land is making records

La La Land is a romantic modern musical. It was written and directed by Damien Chazelle, who with just 37-years has amazed the public with this film. He received the award for best director in the 2017 Golden Globes, and it is nominated in the same category in the upcoming Academy Awards.

La La Land tells the story of a jazz musician (Ryan Gosling) and an aspiring actress (Emma Stone) who fall in love in Los Angeles. The screenplay was written in 2010, but Chazelle couldn’t find a studio willing to finance the movie.

After the success Whiplash had in 2014, Summit Entertainment decided to assume the project. The movie had a budget of $30 million, and it has grossed about $180 million worldwide.

Earlier this year, in the Golden Globe awards, La La Land set a record for the most awards won by a single movie. It won the next categories: Best Motion Picture, Best Original Score, Best Original Song (“city of Stars”), Best Actor (Ryan Gosling), best Actress (Stone) Best Screenplay and Best Director.

La La Land might become the most awarded movie in the history

Now, the success of the movie is reflected in the number of nominations it has received for the 89th Annual Academy Awards. It received 14 nominations including nominations for best picture, director, actor, actress, original screenplay, cinematography, costume design, film editing, original score, original song, production design, sound editing and sound mixing.

This makes La La Land one of the most nominated movies of all times, at the same level of All about Eve (1950) and Titanic (2017). What is next to see is how many Oscars will La La Land receive on the day of the ceremony. All about Eve won six Oscar, while Titanic got 11.

Tough La La Land is believed to be the favorite movie of the 2017 award season, it is followed by Moonlight and Arrival, both with eight nominations. Moonlight is a story about a young black man at three stages of his life, and Arrival is a sci-fi movie based on the 1998 short story “Story of your life” by Ted Chiang.

The Academy Awards ceremony is set on February 26. It will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. This edition could be a quite politicized one, given the reactions prompted by Meryl Streep’s speech during the Golden Globe ceremony. As well, this is the third year of protests due to the lack of diversity among the nominees, which led to the #OscarSoWhite hashtag.
