Since its first announcement, Disney fans have been concerned about the casting choices the studio would make and some even created an online petition to ask the company for a Chinese actress as the main star of the film. The fans’ request got over 100,000 signatures, and it appears the studio is listening to them.

Real-life Mulan

Over the past years, Disney has embarked on previous adventures by recreating its classical and most famous productions such as The Jungle book, Cinderella, Maleficient and the upcoming film of The Beauty and The Beast, portrayed by Emma Watson. The company recently announced a remake of their animated classic, The Lion King.

Disney Studios has just announced that is currently in the search for a Chinese actress to represent the role of the legendary warrior Mulan, meanwhile, the project remains without a director.

The film’s script will be based on the original film with 2015 adaptations from Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, both known for working on motion pictures such as Jurassic World, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the upcoming Avatar sequel.

Disney is taking Lauren Hynek and Elizbeth Martin’s original Mulan script and combining it with a more serious and elaborate adaptation with the Chinese ballad that tells the story of Hua Mulan, the child of a war warrior that passes herself as a man to fight the war against the Hun invasion.

The motion picture company has been embarking in a pro-female movement by recreating adventures of young girls who become heroines in the process, in the past few years all of Disney movies have been focused on the subject.

Frozen, for example, released in 2013 told the story of a princess who had incredible powers and her internal struggle to accept herself with the help of her young sister Elsa.  The movie became one of the company’s and the world’s largest franchise a the moment with $1.072 billion as of 2014.

Disney’s movie Brave tells the similar story of a young girl who is being forced to marry at an early age by her mother, Merida opposes to the queen’s commands and struggles with an acceptance relationship with her mother. The movie’s net worth is currently $540.4 million.

The studio is following this feminist line with the upcoming release of Moana, a Hawaiian princess that embarks on an adventure in the ocean with a Maui god.

Disney’s original Mulan film was released in 1998 and was worth over $304.3 million with reproductions from all over the world.
