On Sunday Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced her resignation as the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairwoman in the aftermath of leaked controversial and embarrassing emails among Democrats on Saturday.

In the eve of the Democratic Convention expected to begin on July 25, thousands of emails exchanged between Democratic officials were leaked to WikiLeaks webpage into what appears to be an attempt to create confusion and controversy among Democrats inside and out the committee thus aiding the Presidential election of Republican Candidate, Donald Trump.

Turmoil takes over the Democratic Party

Wasserman, 49, who is the third woman to lead the DNC, resigned to the position Sunday just a few hours after the retired democratic candidate, Bernie Sanders demanded her resignation and accused her of undermining his candidacy to favor Clinton’s. Sanders has long accused Wasserman Schultz of prejudice, he actually sued the DNC for denying him access to voter data and setting debates for him at odd hours. “I don’t think she is qualified to be the chair of the DNC,” said Sanders on Sunday.

Apparently, the leaked emails included critics against Sanders while he was in the run for the White House. As well, emails are criticizing Bernie’s supporters, which makes harder for Clinton to patch up disagreement with them. Despite that, Sanders alleged he was not surprised by the information of the emails because he always knew the DNC was supporting Clinton instead of him.

In fact, Wasserman Schultz, who is also the Representative for Florida’s 23rd Congressional District, has worked with Hillary Clinton as campaign co-chair for Clinton’s 2008 run for president. As she resigned, she also stated that electing Hillary on the upcoming presidential elections is critical for America’s future and said that she is willing to serve as a surrogate for her campaign across the states to ensure her victory.

In response, Clinton announced that Wasserman Schultz would serve as honorary chair of the campaign’s 50-state program while she thanked her for all the work she has made before. As well, President Obama announced how grateful he is for Wasserman Schultz’s commitment, passion, and warmth. “No one works harder for her constituents in Congress than Debbie Wasserman Schultz,” said Obama.

The truth behind the emails

Though there is no confirmation about who is the direct responsible for the email leaks, according to the Clinton campaign staffers and cyber experts, Russia intelligence is behind the whole disaster. Apparently they hacked the DNC accounts and now they are delivering the disturbing emails just before the start of the Democratic Convention with the purpose of helping Donald Trump.

Trump didn’t lose time to comment on the controversy saying Debbie Wasserman Schultz was overrated and he compared her with the Chairman of the Republican National Committee, saying Reince Priebus has always been tougher and smarter than her.

Apparently, the DNC must reinforce its security since it is not the first time it was reported its system has been broke, as Wasserman Schultz admitted in May. Now there’s the doubt of who might replace her. While the announcement is made, the interim chair of the DNC will be assumed by Democrat Donna Brazile.
