Ferrari recalls 2016 California T convertibles over fire risk

Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey – Ferrari North America Inc. is recalling some 2016 California T convertibles due to the risk of fuel leaks, as the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) stated on Friday. The problem of the fuel leak in the engine compartment affected 185 vehicles that were manufactured between Sept. 8 and Nov. 11, 2015. The recall began on Dec. 14.

A supplier provided a part that came with a manufacturing defect, which led to the increased risk of fuel leak, according to documents Ferrari submitted to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a division of the DOT. The NHTSA said in an advisory on its website on Friday that the affected convertibles might have a low-pressure fuel line that doesn’t connect well to the fuel pump feed pipe, which increases the chances of fire breaking out on a car.

On Nov. 23, over 50 dealers from Beverly Hills, California, to Philadelphia were required to stop sales of the 2016 model California T, a luxury car with a base price of $231,606 according to The Car Guide. The stop sale notice issued by Ferrari states that dealers will evaluate potentially affected models and replace the low-pressure fuel assembly free of charge.

Separately, Ferrari, owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, recalled 800 cars over the summer in the United States because of a complication with its Takata airbags. Millions of vehicles worldwide were affected by the problem, which caused, at least, eight deaths and several injuries.

Ford is also struggling with fuel leak complications. The Michigan-based company is recalling some cars year 2013 due to a defect in the fuel-delivery unit, which is at a high risk of cracking and leading to a fuel leak. The problem affected up to 868 vehicles. Owners of Ford Explorer, Flex, Taurus Police Interceptor and Taurus and Lincoln MKS and MKT will receive a notification and Ford will cover the costs of replacement of the defective unit.
