Beijing – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will pay an official visit to the United States from Tuesday to Thursday, but before heading to America the minister made some comment about the US’s accusations of China raising tensions in the South China Sea by the deployment of surface-to-air missiles on a disputed island.

The countries are expected to exchange views on important matters, but about referring to the South China Sea issue, Hua Chunying, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said the U.S. should honor its commitment of taking no position on competing for territorial claims and stop playing up the issue or creating tension.

China claims most of the South China Sea, through which more than $5 trillion in global trade passes every year, but Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and Taiwan have rival claims.

Wang Yi said on Monday that China positioning necessary, limited defensive facilities on its own territory is not substantively different from the United States defending Hawaii.

“It’s this that is the biggest cause of the militarization of the South China Sea. We hope that the United States does not confuse right and wrong on this issue or practice double standards.” Chunying said on Monday.

She added that the U.S is the source of tension and militarization of the South China Sea as it has sent military vessels and planes to areas in the South China Sea to conduct close-in reconnaissance.
