Tarantino calls police officers ‘murderers’ at New York City protest

New York – Bill Bratton, the police Commissioner of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) slammed the famous Oscar-winning director, Quentin Tarantino after he marched and protested against police brutality and called officers “murderers” in front of hundreds of demonstrators, at the Washington Square Park.

The “Pulp fiction” director, traveled from California to New York to speak in front of dozens of marchers who were protesting and claiming for justice to people killed by police brutality. The event was organized by the group “Rise Up October,” a national anti-“Police Terror” activists that pledged to fight for those killed by injustices caused by police officers.

The mass demonstration was planned for October 24, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, at the Washington Square Park in New York City.

‘Police Terror’

The filmmaker talked about the police terror that has been increasing during the last year in the USA, especially in NY. He emphasized how important was to recognize that police officers were just murderers with uniforms. Moreover, he declared that cops should pay with justice their brutality and negligence.

“When I see murders, I do not stand by. I have to call the murderers, […] If it was being dealt with, then these murdering cops would be in jail or at least be facing charges,” said Tarantino to protesters.

Furthermore, some people declared how ironic was the fact that a director who lives by making movies full of violence and death was protesting against brutality and extreme violence. Patrick Lynch, president of the New York’s Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, expressed his anger saying that those people that Tarantino called murderers fight and sacrifice themselves every day to keep American citizens safe.

“The police officers that Quentin Tarantino calls ‘murderers’ aren’t living in one of his depraved big screen fantasies – they’re risking and sometimes sacrificing their lives to protect communities from real crime and mayhem,” said Lynch in a statement

Furthermore, the Fox News host Harris Faulkner, declared that the film director actions were nonsense because he was using his power to protest against police brutality when, at the same time, he makes violence humorous in films.

Boycott

Protest against police violence is not new since in 2014 the media has had an important role in spreading these violent contents. The Guardian estimates that more than 930 people have been killed by police in the United States so far in 2015, with 436 being white, 226 black and 143 Latino.

Nonetheless, Tarantino has become the target of a boycott on the part of New York’s largest police union and now his career may be compromised because of his actions.

“Shame on him, particularly at this time, where we’re grieving the murder of a New York City police officer, […] Basically, there are no words to describe the contempt I have for him and his comments Bratton said during an interview,” said Brattoni in an interview.
