Melissa McCarthy says goodbye to ‘Mike and Molly’

After Rondi Reed – Molly’s mother-in-law in the series – broke the news on December 9 through a Facebook post, the Emmy winner Melissa McCarthy tweeted about the cancellation of the popular comedy Mike and Molly on Monday, December 14. The reasons the CBS network had to put an end to the sitcom have not been revealed.

“I was shocked and heartbroken when @CBS canceled #MikeAndMolly,” McCarthy wrote to her Twitter followers. “I would have shot this show for 50 more years. I’ll miss my 2nd family.”

CBS has already decided to shorten the next season, which will only have 13 episodes, even after the network announced a full renewal of 22 episodes in March. The shooting will be done by Jan. 27, 2016, but it is unknown when the sixth season will be aired.

On her Facebook post, Reed said that CBS had its reasons and that she would not discuss them nor take part in a campaign to try to change their intentions. She expressed her gratitude towards her co-workers and everyone who has been part of the show throughout the years, allowing her to learn many things about the business. She also thanked all the fans for having shown their unconditional support across the seasons.

As for McCarthy’s career, Forbes declared her this year’s third-highest paid actress in the world, after Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett Johansson. Many fans started to follow her when she was working on Gilmore Girls playing the role of Sookie St. James. However, she became a more acclaimed actress after Bridesmaids, as she was awarded an Emmy in 2011 for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series.

While she was comfortable working on Mike and Molly, McCarthy shot her first film Tammy, which was directed by Ben Falcone, her husband. Even though it didn’t receive the same attention as her collaborations with Paul Feig in Bridesmaids, Spy and Heat, Tammy allowed the couple to try out a do-over.

Falcone also directed his wife in The Boss, the Suze Orman parody. McCarthy also plays the voice of Watts in the upcoming animated comedy B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations by Dreamworks Animation.

Certainly, it must be hard for McCarthy to say goodbye to an incredible job she has been performing for so many years, but she has proven to be brilliant enough to succeed in other projects. In August this year, she launched her clothing line Seven7 and recently appeared in ads for the holiday-inspired wear, as she lost 50 pounds and looks more happy and radiant than ever.
