Madonna: Billboard’s 2016 Woman of the Year

Billboard announced Friday that Madonna would be awarded the 2016 Woman of the Year after hitting the record as the highest-grossing female tourist artists of all times. Madonna will receive her award at the 11th annual Women in Music event December 9 in New York City.

Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour is one of the biggest touring acts in music history. The tour ended in March and added another achievement to the pop star list of successes. The Queen of Pop sold 1 million tickets during the Rebel Heart Tour only, winning about $170 million.

The Rebel Heart Tour also made Madonna the highest grossing solo touring artist in Billboard Boxscore history. The record backs from 1990 and Madonna positioned herself with $1.31 billion in total concert grosses.

But there is more, Madonna is the best-selling artist of all time, earning 8 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200. She also has 12 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, making the iconic diva the first person with most No. 1s on a single Billboard chart.

Another record:  Madonna has the most top hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. How many? 38.

“With her creative vision, relentless innovation, and dedication to philanthropic causes, she is an inspiration to hundreds of millions of people around the world, all while shattering every career record out there. She is a prominent feminist on top of that, a one-of-a-kind artist who’s used her influence to change the conversation about women, sexuality, and equal rights,” said Janice Min, president and chief creative officer of The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group.

Min also emphasized the fact that Madonna is one of an exotic number of super-artists that have managed to make her career transcend music. Madonna is a constant force in pop culture and an inspiration for more than one generation.

The pop diva is not only about music but about philanthropic work, trying to make an impact in remote parts of the world. One of Madonna’s projects is Raising Malawi, and the organization is constructing Malawi’s first pediatric surgery and intensive care unit. Madonna’s selfless efforts are going to help save more lives. The center will open in 2017.

The iconic singer, who has won seven Grammy, will receive her Billboard Billboard’s 2016 Woman of the Year on December 9, and the event will be air nationally on Lifetime on December 12.

Additionally, Billboard will publish the Billboard’s Women Music list, which shows the 50 most powerful female executive in the industry. Do not be surprised if Madonna is also in that list.
