Drug lord ‘El Chapo’ Gúzman was captured again by Mexican authorities

Mexico – Joaquín Guzman, best recognized as “El Chapo,” who is an infamous Mexican drug lord that escaped from a maximum security prison last year in July, was captured by Mexican authorities on Friday, according to declarations posted on Twitter from the Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto.

Peña Nieto wrote that the mission was accomplished and he wanted to notify Mexicans that Joaquín Guzmán has been captured. Last year, the security alarms of Mexico went on, when it was noted that El Chapo had escaped after he entered into a shower and walked away from the maximum security Altiplano Federal Prison, through a 932 miles tunnel that went from the shower to a house that was close to the prison.

El Chapo was the drug lord of the Sinaloa Cartel, which is known for drug trafficking, huge amounts of money laundering and the organization of crime. It is based in Culiacan Sinaloa but it performs in Baja California, Durango, Sonora, and Chihuahua.

According to the Mexican security cabinet, Guzmán was hurt in the face and the leg, while he tried to escape after he noted he was being pursued and attempted to run. The operation was possible because of collaboration, intelligence work and information exchange that was done between Mexican authorities and international agencies.

The Mexican Navy announced that the operation was carried in a home in Los Mochis town, where six people were arrested and five were killed. In Mexico, the Navy has been assigned for the control and the pursuing of drug cartels, because it is thought that the institution is not as corrupt as others in the country, such as the police and the army, as the journal El Universal declared.

The most wanted drug lord that was being searched by the Mexican government and the DEA, had become into a pop character that could be the equivalent of a Robin Hood from South America. It seems impressive that Guzman has even been recognized by Forbes as one of the most powerful people in the world. El Chapo has appeared in hip hop songs that say “All I wanna be is El Chapo, three billion dollars in pesos.”

“He’s a fascinating character. He’s the epitome of the problem. He’s a poor kid who had some family connections in the drug trade, no options, no real education … [and] becomes a big-time drug lord,” said Malcolm Beith, who wrote the book Last Narco, to CNN in an interview

Thousands of people around the world have expressed their opinions about the capture of El Chapo. A user from Twitter, @lilduval, wrote on Friday “El Chapo caught… for now,” while president Enrique Peña Nieto, @EPN, wrote, “My appreciation goes to the Security Cabinet of the Government of the Republic for this important achievement for the State of Law in Mexico.”

It has not been declared if the drug lord is going to be extradited to the United States, which had previously requested its extradition, just a few weeks before El Chapo escaped last year, according to the Attorney General of Mexico, the captured man is going to stay in Mexico.
