By next year, Canadians may be able to buy cannabis from every pharmacy and liquor store if a motion is passed. Last April, Canadian health minister, Jane Philpott, said that it was expected, in spring 2017, to file legislation to make legal and regulate recreational marihuana in her country.
The prime minister, Justin Trudeau announced in his last election campaign that his government would legalize recreational marijuana. Also, Philpott said in a special session of the UN general assembly in New York that Canadian legislation will ensure marijuana will not be consumed by children and criminals will not have a profit from this law.
“We will work with law enforcement partners to encourage appropriate and proportionate criminal justice measures,” she said. “We know it is impossible to arrest our way out of this problem.“
Medical marijuana vs. recreational marijuana.
Since 2011, medical marijuana is legal in Canada. At present, the Canadian government controls the distribution and consummation of cannabis in the country. Only licensed producers can distribute medical marijuana by mail. If the motion is passed, this could change significantly next year. Also, it is expected that Health Canada officers will allow patients to grow their source by August.
Marijuana investors, farmers, and industrialists will mobilize in all Canada to make this legislation possible. If Canada allows recreational marijuana, this will benefit local Canadian growers that at this time are banned to partner up with big investors, to open bank accounts and to make baking transactions.
In Canada, medical marijuana generates up to $150 million in sales entirely different in the case of United States with a whopping number of $4.3 billion in sales.
Is Denver NORML pushing towards recreational marijuana legislation as well?
According to The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), in the state of Colorado, marijuana is legal to purchase, possess and consume, but only in private residences. Regarding this last point, Jordan Person, executive director of NORML claims that people cannot consume marijuana because they do not have a place to do it. For example, when landlords do not allow it, or in the case of thousands of tourists that visit Denver on a daily basis.
To answer that question, NORML is working on The Responsible Denver User a motion that is expected to be passed to legalize recreational marijuana in establishments in the United States. NORML is working to develop a regulatory framework in which responsible adult consumers as well as for private marijuana facilities and clubs will have a space in Colorado’s lagislation. Through collecting signatures, NORML will make certain establishments and organizations receive a license.
