Actress Naya Rivera shares her intimate life experiences

Naya Rivera shares her decision to terminate her pregnancy and other intimate experiences in her soon to be published memoir, “Sorry Not Sorry”.

The 29-year-old actress from California, known for her role as Santana in the teen musical series “Glee” as well as her character Blanca in “Devious Maids,” spoke openly about having had an abortion in 2010. She said the decision came at a point in her life when she had just split from current husband, actor Ryan Dorsey, and wanted to focus on growing her career.

On a day off from filming “Glee”, Rivera underwent the procedure. She said she chose not to tell Dorsey at the time. The two made their way back together and tied the knot in 2014, welcoming their baby boy, Josey, last year.

The actress also spoke about suffering from anorexia when she was in high school. She revealed that by the time she was in grade 10, she had become aware of her eating disorder.

“I just avoided food at all costs,” Rivera stated, according to the Daily Mail.

She admitted to either throwing away the lunch her mom would pack or resort to excuses as to why she gave it away.

She details her battle with food in her book where she also mentioned having had plastic surgery. According to an article published on Page Six, the actress underwent breast augmentation surgery when she turned 18. She stated that the main reason for the procedure was more related to self-confidence than sexuality. Ten years later she says she is still enjoying her $8,000 decision.

Rivera’s decisions to undergo plastic surgery and terminate her pregnancy, especially the latter, are under scrutiny by some of the public. Stereotypical connotations surrounding plastic surgery are of superficiality and self-consciousness while those related to abortion are murder and sin. While every individual is entitled to their opinions, the harsh judgment and biased expectations of women and their bodies are rooted in a jaded mentality produced and reinforced by a problematic social system.

Abortion always brings about sensitive discussions, debates, and arguments where forces such as religion or tradition have a significant impact on people’s views. Granted, it is a serious decision to make but one that should be taken by the person to whom the body belongs.

Rivera’s memoir may be perceived as controversial to some, however, regardless of how readers feel about the book, one thing for sure is that her honesty is a golden quality. The awareness of her struggles and triumphs will continue to contribute to her personal and professional growth. The young actress claims to have already lived a whole life, stating that she feels like a 79-year-old trapped in a 29-year-old’s body.

According to the International Business Times, Rivera hopes her son will read her book one day for him to have a glance at some of the issues women face.
