More than 800 Boko Haram militants surrendered in 3 weeks

Minawao, Cameroon – It was reported by the Defense Headquarters of Cameroon that over 800 members of Boko Haram have surrendered to the military. The surrendered insurgents will be submitted to rehabilitation camps in Minawao in order to reintegrate them into society, as Boko Haram has announced allegiance to ISIS and it was named the deadliest terrorist organization of 2015.

Cameroon’s Defense Headquarters officials stated last Tuesday that they were establishing a rehabilitation camp through Operation Safe Corridor in order to accommodate captured and surrendered extremists.

The military refused to provide any details as to how the camps are run, although it is said that it is to include important vocational training, as many of Boko Haram’s militants are captured prisoners and civilians.

The fight against Boko Haram

To date, Nigerian forces have been able to rescue over 11,000 people captured by Boko Haram; which is just a thread of hair, as the Islamic extremist group has killed over 20,000 people and has forced almost 3 million African civilians to leave their homes.

Boko Haram is known for their mass abductions and executions, as they have also been known to abduct hundreds of schoolgirls to use them as suicide bombers.

Captured civilians are taught to hold the explosive charge under the armpit so it is kept steady, to perform cuts starting from the back of the neck, and a plethora of horrible instructions to commit acts of terror.

There have been at least 22 female suicide bombers in Cameroon since the start of this year, as it was stated by Issa Tchiroma Bakary, Cameroon’s minister of communications, who argues that you cannot know anymore if a little girl coming towards you is going to explode at any minute.

Female suicide bombers have become Boko Haram’s latest strategy in defending their territory, as they have lost de facto strength thanks to the efforts of Nigerian and Cameroonian military, but there is still a long way to go as the group keeps training young girls and women to “maximize the number of victims” in each bombing, as stated by Cameroonian Colonel Didier Badjeck.
