BALTIMORE – An off-duty Baltimore City police officer shot to death a man who was trying to rob him early Saturday morning, as reported by NBC.

Edel Cato Moreland, 32, was carrying a handgun and said he was going to rob an 18-year veteran who was working at the operation section of the Baltimore City Police Department. The suspect collapsed in the street a short distance away after the officer fired him with his service revolver.

The episode happened just after 1:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Homewood Road in Linthicum Heights, Maryland, according to Anne Arundel County police. Evidence technicians found Moreland’s gun at the scene and affirmed it was not real, just a black toy that resembled a revolver very well.

The suspect’s body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy. The off-duty officer’s identity was not revealed by the authorities.

Anne Arundel County Police ask anyone with any information about the incident to call Homicide Detectives at 410-222-4731. People who prefer to remain anonymous can feel free to contact the Anne Arundel County Police Tip Line 410-222-4700 or Metro Crime Stoppers.
