Beyoncé explained the message of “Formation” in an interview with Elle for their May issue, People reported. She has been criticized and accused of “anti-police”, but the artist clarified that she actually has a deep admiration for officers who risk their lives to keep people safe.

The message of her new video is powerful and symbolic, but controversial for some people.

“I mean, I’m an artist and I think the most powerful art is usually misunderstood”, the 34-year-old artist expressed in the interview.

Anyone who thinks Beyoncé is anti-police, she said, is totally mistaken.

The star still remarked she totally opposed to police injustice and brutality. She said that the feelings she expressed by celebrating her roots and culture during Black History Month existed long before herself.

Feminism doesn’t have to be a negative word

The singer also focuses on creating a better world by encouraging her fans through feminism, which is one of her particular passions. She told Elle that it was very simple to understand feminism the way she conceives it: a feminist is a person who thinks men and women should have equal rights.

Beyoncé said in the interview that she introduced the word and her concept of it in her 2013 hit “Flawless” with the purpose of clarifying its true meaning and not for propaganda. She commented that she didn’t understand why people believed feminism should exclude the opposite sex. “Ask anyone, man or woman, ‘Do you want your daughter to have 75 cents when deserves $1?’ What do you think the answer would be?” the star added.

Tina Knowles, her mother, helped her become a “leader” and “independent thinker”, Beyoncé told Elle. She credited her for making her feel “safe enough to dream”. The globally acclaimed singer also mentioned that being a mother has increased her hopes to see a better world.

The last two months have been very important to Beyoncé. She started 2016 by releasing her new music video and song, gave an outstanding performance at the Super Bowl 50 halftime show, announced her fans that her world tour was coming and debuted Ivy Park, her new clothing line. And her album is set to be launched anytime soon.
