Tortured in prison

Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán, better known as “El Chapo” is one of Mexico’s biggest drug lords as he serves as head of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the countries largest drug trafficking cartels that provide drugs such as marijuana, MDMA, and methamphetamine from Colombia, trough Mexico and into the United States.

After Guzman’s rival, Osiel Cárdenas, was arrested he became the biggest drug lord in the country and according to the United States Department of the Treasury, he is the world’s most powerful drug trafficker. Guzman was also one of the Mexico’s richest people with a net of over $1 billion.

Some have compared Guzman, to the deceased Colombian trafficker Pablo Escobar, for the power he held in Mexico, even authorities respected his presence due to the amount of influences he had in the country.

El Chapo was first captured by authorities in 1993, extradited and sentenced to serve 20 years in a federal prison in Mexico after he was charged with trafficking and murder claims. However, Guzman escaped in 2001.

Authorities captured the drug lord in 2014 and sentenced him to Mexico’s El Altiplano’s prison, where he made his famous escape through a tunnel he dug himself under the shower of his cell.

El Chapo was captured in January of the current year and has since remained in Ciudad de Juarez prison, waiting to be extradited to the United States in a pending justice battle. However, recent claims from his lawyer confirm the drug lord is facing physical and emotional torture.

According to Dr. Julio Cesar Ayuzo, the psychiatric that performed El Chapo’s evaluation the drug lord is in a good physical appearance but seemed disorientated about the date and was anxious about being sit down.

According to Ayuzo, the drug lord is having “auditory hallucinations” and according to his lawyer, he is the subject of torture from the guards of the prison.  According to Rodriguez, authorities are scared that Guzman escapes again, so they constantly wake him up to know he is in his isolation cell.

The Mexican government has explained the security measures they have to take after Guzman’s two prison breaks, as a way of justification to the drug lord’s isolation from other prisoners.

El Chapo and his lawyers are still waiting to know whether the head of the Sinaloa Cartel will be extradited and charged in The United States.
